Increased Risk of Dementia after Anesthesia and Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: The potential relationship between anesthesia, surgery, and onset of dementia remains elusive. Aims: To determine whether the risk of dementia increases after surgery with anesthesia, and to evaluate possible associations among age, mode of anesthesia, type of surgery, and risk of dementia. Method: The study cohort included an anesthetized group of patients aged 50 years and older who were anesthetized between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2007, and a control group of randomly selected ageand sex-matched patients. Patients were followed until December 31, 2010 to identify signs of early dementia. Results: Relative to control patients who were not anesthetized, patients who underwent anesthesia and surgery exhibited an increased risk of dementia (HR = 1.99) and a reduced mean interval to dementia diagnosis. The risk of dementia increased in patients who received intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) anesthesia, regional anesthesia (RA), and general anesthesia (GA). Conclusions: The results of our nationwide population-based study suggest that patients who undergo anesthesia and surgery are at increased risk for dementia.

Delirium is a common postoperative complication in adolescence patients and is associated with increased costs, morbidity and mortality. Recently, an association between the occurrence of delirium and increased risk of dementia has been revealed. Several risk factors have been found to be related with the development of postoperative delirium. However, the three strategies include monitoring d...
متن کاملAnesthesia for leg amputation in high risk patients: Case reports
Background: High risk cases of leg amputation were one of major concerns in anesthesiologists. Cases: Sixteen cases with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status (ASA-PS) 3 or 4 for leg amputation were reported. Fifteen patients were medicated with more than two anticoagulants and 11 patients had bleeding tendency. Thirteen patients received below knee amputation (BKA) and thre...

Aims and background: Huntington’s chorea )HC( is a rare, autosomal, dominant hereditary disorder of the nervous system. This disease is characterized by progressive chorea movement, dementia and psychiatric disorders. In these patients, an abnormal response to many anesthetic drugs has been observed. The primary goal of general anesthesia in these patients is airway protection and a fast and ...
متن کاملExposure to general anesthesia and the risk of dementia
Exposure to anesthesia and surgery has been hypothesized to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the exact pathogenesis of AD remains unknown, it potentially involves specific proteins (eg, amyloid beta and tau) and neuroinflammation. A growing body of preclinical evidence also suggests that anesthetic agents interact with the components that mediate AD neuropathology...
متن کاملGeneral anesthetic and the risk of dementia in elderly patients: current insights
In this review, we aim to provide clinical insights into the relationship between surgery, general anesthesia (GA), and dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). The pathogenesis of AD is complex, involving specific disease-linked proteins (amyloid-beta [Aβ] and tau), inflammation, and neurotransmitter dysregulation. Many points in this complex pathogenesis can potentially be influenced ...
